11 Ways Pastors Can Leverage Your Ministry Know-How into Extra Income

Every week I open the More than a Pastor Show by saying this show is about helping pastors leverage your ministry know-how into sustainable income outside of the church, through a business or side hustle that’s right for you. So you can serve God and provide for your family, no matter what.”

But what does the word “leverage” even mean? And how can you tap into the power of leverage to create sustainable income outside the church?

  • The word leverage is used in the financial world to describe the act of using borrowed capital (debt) to make an investment that hopefully creates a return that is greater than the cost of the interest that is charged.
  • In the skilled trades, leverage means to use a tool to gain an advantage.
  • In a negotiation, you have leverage if you hold a strategic advantage over the other party.
  • And when it comes to our work, we leverage our skills, experience, and know-how when we use them to their maximum advantage.

So when we talk about tapping into the power of leverage to create sustainable income outside the church, we mean:

Taking the skills, experience, and know-how that we’ve developed in ministry and strategically applying them to their maximum advantage to create income through our own business or side hustle.

Pastors Have Many Transferrable Ministry Skills that Can be Used in their Own Business

As pastors, we have a host of transferable ministry skills that can be leveraged into our own businesses, in broad categories like:

  1. Leading People and Teams
  2. Managing Projects and Programs
  3. Strategic Planning
  4. Coaching, Consulting, and Mentoring
  5. Hiring and Human Resources
  6. Creativity, Problem Solving, and Innovation
  7. Customer Care and Retention
  8. Writing and Teaching
  9. Stewardship and Fund Development
  10. Spiritual Care and Counseling
  11. Facilities Management

Deciding which ministry skills to leverage, and how, will depend on several factors, including your unique goals, passions, strengths, and the income opportunities that can be created.

In this time of rapid change and disruption affecting the Church, understanding how to leverage your ministry skills outside the church will be incredibly important for every pastor. So you can serve God and provide for your family, no matter what.
